When I think about the woman at the well, I imagine the shame she felt in the presence of Jesus. Whether or not she knew who He was--Her soul did. I imagine her sin felt heavy, dark, and gross. I imagine I would feel like shrinking into myself, into the darkness that my past has been.
But Jesus didn’t look at her and see darkness. His glory, His beauty, His majesty interceded for her. His divinity surpassed all of her sins. The beauty of His character enveloped her. He saw her as HIS. His creation, His vessel, His daughter. And a daughter of the King is nothing less than beautiful. He saw her for who she truly was, in Him. Not who the world saw her and proclaimed her to be. He saw her and defined her worth.
As another daughter of the King, I struggle to see my worth. I tend to place myself in that dark, sinful mess and allow it to become my identity. It makes me uncomfortable to be called beautiful or worthy. But that is what Jesus has done. He has come into my mess, He has broken through the dark places and has said,
“SHE IS MINE.”
I pray my life is a true reflection of His beauty in my life.
